My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies, #2)

I have been wanting to make more original content lately and I’ve wanted to create more posts that I can properly share with you guys and then Rebecca came into my life like a shining bookish angel. We wanted to celebrate one of our most anticipated releases of the year; My Plain Jane, the companion sequel to My Lady Jane. And so we created The Lady Janies Book Tag! JANE LYNCH: A favourite book featuring a character on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum

a havenEvery Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)   People Like Us   Wild Beauty   The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

I don’t know that I really have a favourite lgbtqia+ book (there are too many amazing books to choose from) but, these are some of the most recent ones I’ve read that I’ve loved! I’ve tried to add books from different genres to my list and I think these have all been really fun!

LADY JANE GREY: A short book that packed a punch

The Giver (The Giver, #1)

This is one of my favourite books ever. The Giver hits me every time I read it. It’s like being hit by a truck and then run over by a bus of screaming children… but in a good way.

The Giver is really fun and really smart and I love it more each time I read it.

JANE AUSTEN: Favourite heroine in a classic book

Persuasion

I really want to be cliche and say Elizabeth Bennet but instead, I’m only going to be partially cliche and go with Anne Elliot from Persuasion by the Jane Austen. I could’ve said so many other characters like Meg Murry or Anne Shirley but, I think Anne is a more relatable character. Anne is strong and resilient but always copping the short end of the stick. She’s really sensible and always taking care of her family, but like all of us, she is also impressionable and easily persuaded (hence the title) but by the end of the book she develops as a character and comes into the world a better person.

Wow, I never realised how much I looked up to her until writing this.

JANE EYRE: Your favourite retelling

Lost Boy

Is this even a question at this point? Hi, if you’re new to my blog, my name is Ellyn, I am obsessed with Peter Pan and I have no shame.

Lost Boy is honestly one of my favourite reads of 2017 and by far the best retelling I have ever read and I don’t understand why more people haven’t read it. It’s basically the story of Peter Pan from the perspective of one of the Lost Boys. It also really highlights the bad sides of Peter Pan that you definitely don’t see in the Disney film, which is one of the reasons I love it.

CALAMITY JANE: Your most anticipated release

a havenEscaping from Houdini (Stalking Jack the Ripper #3)   My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies, #2)   Undying (Unearthed, #2)   The Mermaid

I mean, there are just so many. I think my top 2018 release would have to be Escaping From Houdini but, honestly, I am looking forward to so many good books this year!

JANE FONDA: A character who upholds feminist ideals

The Nowhere Girls

For this one, I’m going to go with the group of girls called The Nowhere Girls from the book of the same name. These girls are all amazing and the book is about them trying to find a voice and defend themselves in a town that doesn’t believe/& shames rape victims. It’s a really great book that gives a voice to women and shows how amazing we can be when we work together.

JANE KRAKOWSKI: An underrated book you wish more people would read

The Golden Door (The Three Doors Trilogy, #1)

The Golden Door is amazing and you should go and read it right now. I know that I talk about this book a lot but it is honestly worth it! I re-read this trilogy every year or two and it never gets old. I love the characters and I love his unique and interesting the books are, it just makes me really happy whenever I read it!

THE LADY JANIES: Two or more authors you wish would write a book together

haven haven haven haven havenA Wrinkle in Time   Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)

We all have an author duo dream team. for a lot of people it’s Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli, but for me, hands down, it has to be Madeleine L’Engle & Seanan McGuire. I love their books and I think their book baby would be amazing! I love L’Engle’s writing and I think Seanan McGuire always writes really self-aware and interesting stories so combining their ideas would be amazing!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BLOGGING?

I have been blogging since June 1st of 2016. So, I’ve officially been blogging for just under 2 years. I know its cliché to say but, I honestly hadn’t realised I had been blogging for so long and time has just flown by so quickly, and that’s all due to you guys! (because you’re all awesome)

DO YOU ENJOY DOING TAGS?

I do enjoy doing tags, and I hope to create my own someday, but I definitely don’t do them as often as I could o maybe should on my blog. I just find that I am less creative when I do tags, and my blog is really the only place I have a creative space, so I guess I just do them less because I’m a snob and must always be at the centre of attention. *not really and am I writing sarcasm right? help me!*

DO YOU FOLLOW THE BLOGS THAT FOLLOW YOU?

Um… am I a bad blogger if I say no?

DESCRIBE YOUR BLOG IN 5 WORDS?

Recommendations. Anxiety. Honest. Aussie. Red.

HOW MANY POSTS HAVE YOU MADE ON YOUR BLOG? (not counting this tag!)

372. Oh. how time flies by! And, I can guarantee that at least half of those posts are not even worth your time because I was not a quality blogger™ back in the day and I don’t know how my OG followers even dealt with me.

ON A SCALE OF 1-10 HOW MUCH DO YOU ENJOY BLOGGING?

I think I’ll have to say the same as Zuky and go with 7.5

I love blogging (and sometimes blogging loves me) but, if I told you I wasn’t constantly stressed out about my blog and that I don’t sometimes stay up to 3 am because I’m anxious about my blog aesthetic then I would be lying. I am definitely proud of my blog (and myself) but, this is the second most anxiety-inducing thing in my life. Which is quite the achievement because, not to brag, but my life is a mess and I am an anxious heap 275% of the time.

WRITING OR READING BLOG POSTS?

It really depends on my mood, and I am one moody person so really I don’t know how anything gets done. Actually, I am pretty stubborn, so it’s probably that. Sometimes I will literally refuse to let myself get up until I finish my blog post/outline. You need to pee? Type faster!

Yup. I’m classy, don’t you know?

Honestly, though, it really does depend on the day and whether or not my brain wants to work with me. I will either bake 10 cakes, write 5 blog posts, finish a book and “sing” the entire Aladdin Musical soundtrack 30 times throughout the day, or I will sit on the couch, probably bake at least one cake and watch like, half an episode of The Office. I generally have to force myself to go through my reader though, because I guess I hate socialising or something, I don’t know.

3 QUOTES, 3 DAYS: DAY THREE

It’s day three! Are you relieved? Funnily enough, I’m not and I couldn’t be more grateful to Rebecca & Malanie for tagging me in this. I’ve never been one for quotes or the aesthetic of them but this tag has really made me appreciate them and the author who wrote or said them. So without further ado, here is my quote for the last day of the tag!

Today I’m putting the light on another quote, though it doesn’t come from a book. I thought since my last two quotes have been directy from the page I would change it up with a verbal quote, this time from one of the most famous authors in our history!

Miss Jane Austen had this to say about the importance of tea in her life. Might you feel the same?

JANE AUSTEN! While I have yet to read all of her works, I am making an effort to read more classics this year even though I haven’t started Uni yet. I really love this quote because it pretty much sums me up – if it’s a good and productive day you can bet I’m drinking some tea. This is especially fitting for me at the moment as it is definitely that aesthetic tea-reading time of year in Australia – it hasn’t stopped raining all week and so, naturally I haven’t stopped reading!

This quote was inevitable because it just makes sense – this is such a relatable quote – it discusses humanity and what it means to be human in such a frank way that it’s not hard to look at yourself after reading it. This quote just promotes discussion and I love it!

Sirius Black

I think that there are so many fantastic quotes in the Harry Potter books – I mean hell, there are seven books. But, this one is definitely my favourite – you can’t help but really take a good hard look at yourself after reading it.

Funnily enough, writing this post has really reminded me that I have never tagged and highlighted any of my copies of HP!

I am not usually one for quotes and I never remember them but, this year I’ve been embracing tagging and highlighting in my books so since I’ve started doing that I have found that I’m noticing quotes I love a lot more often!

fireheart-bitch-queen: “Stalking Jack the Ripper by @kerrimaniscalco ”

STALKING JACK THE RIPPER

At this point, I think my obsession is getting predictable but do I care? No. I love this series and I want all you whether you’ve been here for a year or a day, to know how much I appreciate this series being in my life.

NEW YEAR, NEW BOOKS TAG

Hey guys, today I am coming at you guys with a short little book tag to help get myself back into blogging for the year. I am currently in a but if a blogging slump so this is only a small tag, so excuse me if this isn’t incredibly detailed.

1. FIRST READ OF 2018

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME

Call Me by Your Name      You can read my spoiler-free review of the book & film here!

So far, my year is going pretty well. As I’m writing this I am in the back end of January and so far I have already read books I know will be 2018 favourites!

2. BEST READS OF 2017

You can read my blog posts about my 2017 favourites here & here

Some of my 2017 favourites were:

LOST BOY / CARAVAL / INVICTUS / SCYTHE

Lost Boy Caraval (Caraval, #1) Invictus Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1)

3. MY 2018 READING GOAL

Image result for 2018 goodreads reading challenge

My Goodreads Reading Goal is 52 books. So far this year  (21/01/18) I have read 10 books and 1 comic! I am super proud of my progress so far.

You can keep up with my progress here!

4. NEW AUTHOR/ GENRE I WANT TO READ IN 2018

SLEEPING BEAUTIES

Sleeping Beauties

This year I would really like to give Stephen King a shot, as I’ve never had the guts to read one of his books!

5. A READING HABIT I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE

Oh, boy, I could go on for days!

I have a lot of reading habit issues. Mostly, I would just like to keep reading. This year, I am starting Uni so I really don’t know how my habits will change, though, I feel like I will get a lot less physical reading done. So, this year I would like to actually read some of the books with my eyeballs, instead of relying on audiobooks for all of my reading.

6.  MY MOST ANTICIPATED 2018 RELEASE

Image result for escaping from houdini kerri maniscalco

My most anticipated release of 2018 would have to be Escaping From Houdini. I am officially obsessed with this series. ALSO, look at this cover I am screeching! This book is going to be so much fun and I am completely hooked on this series!

THE GOODREADS TAG

Hey guys, today I am coming at you with a book tag to really kick off the new year. Today we’re doing the Goodreads Tag, which I think is fitting as I’ve been using the site since 2014. Somehow I’ve never done the tag but I’m sure I’ll be able to update the tag every year or two in the future!

arrowicon

1.  WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU MARKED AS ‘READ’?

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

As I’m writing this the latest book I added to my 2018 challenge is Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire. So far 2018 has been a year of re-reads for me and I am really enjoying this way of reading.

2. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

I have had these books marked as ‘currently reading’ for ages (though I am actively reading something else):

The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding (The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding #1) The Time Traveler's Wife A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, #4)

THE DREADFUL TALE OF PROSPER REDDING / THE TIME TRAVELLER’S WIFE / A FEAST FOR CROWS

Down Among the Sticks and Bones (Wayward Children, #2)

As I’m writing this (10/01/2018) I am currently listening to Down Among The Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire. I am trying to re-read the first two books before I get to Beneath The SUgar Sky (IF MY PREORDER EVER ARRIVES 😠 😠). So far this has been my favourite instalment of the series because of the style it’s written in and the social commentary but I haven’t read book 3 yet so hopefully I’ll love it just as much!

3. WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU MARKED AS ‘WANT TO READ’?

The last books I marked as TBR are Escaping From Houdini along with the fourth book in the same series. I love this series and recently I re-read the first two books in the Stalking Jack The Ripper series and now I finally understand what it means to just completely fall in love with a series. Honestly, I feel like this is my new Harry Potter, this is going to be the series that I read every other year and constantly recommend until you’re all sick of me.

4. WHAT BOOK DO YOU PLAN ON READING NEXT?

Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children, #3)

I definitely plan on reading Beneath The Sugar Sky next as I’m already rereading the series anyway. I love this series so I can’t wait to see what Seanan McGuire has added to the series this year.

5. DO YOU USE THE STAR RATING SYSTEM?

I do, however, I really think that we should be able to use half stars because that just makes sense, doesn’t it? It shouldn’t be a big coding issue and haven’t we GR users been complaining about this for years on end?

6. ARE YOU DOING A 2018 READING CHALLENGE?

Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman Aquaman, Volume 1 by Geoff Johns Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

Image result for 2018 goodreads reading challenge

For 2018 I plan to read 52 books. I will, of course, include anything I read (comics, graphic novels, books) but I want to read 52 actual novels so I will be counting the books separately on a word document or in my bullet journal. If that makes any sense???

So far my reading challenge is going pretty well. I’ve read 6 books and one comic, so I’m pretty proud of my progress so far. Considering I didn’t read that many books in November and December combined in 2017. Hopefully, this means I’m finally starting to narrow down and understand what books I actually enjoy.  Spoiler: Gothic scenery, gruesome murder mysteries.

7. DO YOU HAVE A WISHLIST?

I don’t exactly know what this means, but I’m assuming it means a wishlist shelf?? Generally, if I have a wishlist I will share it on my blog here. Or, I will have a wishlist on Bookdepository because that’s just easier.

8. WHAT BOOK DO YOU PLAN TO BUY NEXT?

fridges fridges fridges fridges Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco

The next books I plan on buying are Stalking Jack The Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula mainly because I am officially in love with this series and I want to be able to mark all of these up with notes and tabs!

9. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE QUOTES? SHARE A FEW.

“A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.”  Steve Martin

“Every time I can’t tell where someone’s calling me from in a room and every time I accidentally start to put my earbuds in both ears I think about you.” Maggie Stiefvater, The Raven King

“′Classic′ – a book which people praise and don’t read.”Mark Twain

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

“It’s not denial. I’m just selective about the reality I accept.” Bill Watterson

10. WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE AUTHORS?

This isn’t totally accurate but these are some of the authors I have on my favourites list.

11. HAVE YOU JOINED ANY GROUPS?

I am part of a few groups but most of them I have turned notifications off because I am not actively joining in with the activities/readathons/ groups.

However, these are the groups I frequent most.

I used to do these every Wednesday but I stopped doing them for a while. However, I am still joined with the group because they have interesting topics.

I just joined this group today because of the discussion topics. I think it’s always interesting to hear everyone else’s povs on the series.

This group is basically T5W but just, on Tuesdays.
