10 ADAPTATIONS I LOVE (BUT HAVEN’T READ THE ORIGINAL SOURCE MATERIAL OF)

lists_feature

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog! Today I’m coming at you to talk about the top 10 movies I love that I haven’t read the original source material of! I feel like we’re so often talking about adaptations in a bad light so I wanted to talk about some of my favourites today! πŸ˜πŸŽ¬πŸ’•

This Is Where I Leave You

Movie (2014)

Book (2009)

I saw this movie for the first time a few years ago and fell in love with it pretty quickly. I love intense family dramas, or really any kind of heavy contemporary story so this movie is basically perfect for me.

This movie surrounds a funeral and has a big cast which I think is why I love it? Honestly, some of my favourite movies revolve around funerals (Death at a Funeral, anyone???) which I realise is totally weird but it always leads to interesting character development and an interesting story. Basically, I love this movie because I love having a big cast and I love seeing interesting character development + heavy subject matter.

2 MEN IN BLACK

Comic (1990)

Who doesn’t love Men In Black? Seriously, if you don’t like the movies I’d be interested to know why. Either way, I’ve been watching these movies since I was really young so they have a soft place in my heart.

These movies are so much fun and such a fun take on aliens living on Earth – I’m planning on re-watching the trilogy again soon in anticipation for the new movie!

3 THE DARK KNIGHT

Movie (2008)

Comic (1940)

I’m a big comic reader but I’ve actually never read a Batman comic? This is totally crazy to me, especially since he’s one of my favourite DC characters. I had to do an essay on The Dark Knight around this time last year and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the movie and Batman as a character.

I’m hoping to pick up some Batman comics eventually, maybe The Killing Joke?

4 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

Movie (1999)

Play (1593)

Two Heath Ledger movies in a row? Hell yes. 10 Things I Hate About You is honestly such a genius film and it’s crazy to me that I avoided it for so many years because romcoms are for weak-minded children? Honestly, 12 year old me was a smallminded fool.

This movie is so much fun to watch and has so many iconic scenes, it’s kind of impossible to dislike it. Also, just straight up Heath Ledger is fantastic in this. Such a good Shakespeare adaptation.

5 JURASSIC PARK

Movie (1993)

Book (1990)

Jurassic Park is one of those franchises that I will still be talking about on my deathbed. I’m pretty sure there isn’t a day that goes by without me talking about dinosaurs. I love the first and third movie in the original trilogy and I also love watching the newer movies with Chris Pratt (though, I think the actor is totally overrated).

Basically, I love dinosaurs and I will defend the Spinosaurus to the day I die. But, for some reason, I keep putting off reading the original duology that the movies are based off.

6 JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH

Journey To The Center of The Earth

Movie (2008)

Book (1864)

Okay, so if I’m obsessed with Jurassic Park I don’t even know how I describe my relationship with the Journey movies. I’m not big on Journey 2 but I love every other adaptation of Journey To The Center of The Earth, and I even own all of them on my dvd shelf. I was first introduced to the story through the 2008 Brandan Fraser version but I do also LOVE the original 1959 version and other 2008 version of the movie. Watching them makes me feel so happy and I’m honestly not sure why.

I love the movies so it actually stuns me a bit that I haven’t read the original book yet. I do own a bindup of all of Verne’s novels but I still haven’t read them which is honestly, ridiculous. I guess I’ll get there eventually.

7 THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Movie (2001)

Book (1955)

I’ve seen all of the movies and I’ve even read The HobbitΒ butΒ I’ve still not gotten around to reading the books which is mildly ridiculous but here we are. To be fair, if the movies are long and detailed, the books must be even more so.

I think I still prefer The Hobbit movies of the original LOTR which I know is a slightly unpopular opinion but, I really prefer the characters and plot, but TLOTR is so popular that I know I will read them eventually, even though they’re such big books.

8 WONDER

Movie (2017)

Book (2012)

I’ve never related to a sibling in a movie as much as I have with the main character’s sister in Wonder. I don’t cry too often watching movies but this movie made me BAWL. If you have a really close sibling relationship but that also has a BIG imbalance in which sibling/s gets more attention from your parents this movie is going to make you feel things.

9 THE PRINCESS BRIDE

Movie (1987)

Book (1973)

This entire movie is iconic. I have never tried it, but I bet if you went through the entire movie scene-by-scene and you would be able to find a famous quote in each scene.Β  I love how quotable this movie is and how there’s pretty much something for everyone in it – also, it’s just so damn funny. It really is a classic.

10 ROOM

Room

Movie (2015)

Book (2010)

This movie is so amazing and so meaningful and so hard to watch and the fact that so many people told me it was terrible and not worth watching really baffles me.Β  Brie Larson won an Oscar for her performance in this movie and it’s not hard to see why – everything about this movie is so hard hitting – I have no idea what reviews for the book are like but if the book is anywhere near as emotional as the movie, I would probably never finish it.

    1. It really is, it hit me so hard in the feels! 😫😭

I don’t know if I could get myself to read the book, watching the movie was such an emotional experience!

  1. If I know it’s based on a book, I always try to read the book first – my favourite adaption by far is Stardust by Neil Gaiman. It’s one of my favourite films and the book is lovely.

To be honest, you’re not missing much by not reading Jurassic Park – I read it before watching the film (I never watched it when I was younger) and wasn’t a huge fan but I really enjoy the film.

    1. I do the same usually, sometimes I just never get around to the book and just end up watching the movie – or more often than not I never know there is a book until I get to the end credits. I really love the Stardust movie, but actually don’t love Neil Gaiman’s books, unfortunately.

Haha, I think I will read Jurassic Park eventually but I’m not in a hurry to read it!

  2. Great list! The Dark Knight is my all time favorite superhero movie and 10 Things is one of my favorite rom-coms, but I haven’t read any of the source material either. I love The Hobbit and LOTR and while I want to read the books, I don’t think I’ll ever get to them :/ I haven’t seen MIB (shocking, I know. I should remedy this before the remake comes out!) but I also love Jurassic Park!

    1. Thank you! The Dark Knight is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen! Haha, I want to read the books too but, I always seem to forget about them!

Yes, MIB is such an interesting idea for a story, I hope you watch at least the first one before you see the new one! YES, Jurassic Park is soo good! 😍

    1. I’ve been meaning to read it too, but I keep forgetting all about it when I make my tbrs! Room is amazing but I don’t think I could handle reading it! Which would you say is more emotional, the movie or the book?
