OVERHYPED BOOKS

Talking about overhyped books is always an awkward subject but sometimes you gotta talk about it.

Fangirl Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) The Coldest Girl in Coldtown Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

01 Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

I was really excited to read Fangirl when I first heard about it, I mean it’s about a Fangirl, that’s my kind of book. Well, it should have been.

  • The writing is bad
  • The main character is immature
  • The Harry Potter elements just annoyed me
  • It’s only quotable if you want to reference it in a book of lines in books that didn’t make sense:

“His eyes were set so deep, it made everything he said more intense.”

“since Wren drunked at her.”

My review

02 Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

The format for this book is really cool but that’s where my positivity ends with this book.

I feel like half of this bok was unnecessary and could have been cut out – I’m sorry, I’ve got other books waiting for me, could people please edit their books properly.

The plot was boring and ordinary and I didn’t care about the characters.

Overall, it was a massive disappointment, literally this novel is huge.

My review

03 Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta

If you want overbearing romance and little to no plot this is your book.

I had high hopes for this book but I think I’m one of the few people that just didn’t care for it. It seems like everyone enjoyed it but for me it was 500 pages of nothing.

My thoughts

04 The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

One one hand Holly Black has really good writing and this story has great promise, on the other hand the insta-love is ick and the cahracters are underdeveloped. This is a standalone so that could contribute to that but this book had potential and I don’t think it quite reached it.

05 Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I have only ever heard praise for this book and I can’t say that I understand what all the hype is about. Celaena Sardothien is soo annoying and I really wasn’t a big fan of any of the characters and couldn’t connect with any of them. I didn’t enjoy any part of this so I won’t be continuing the series.

  1. I totally agree with Fangirl! I felt the characters were so annoying and what Rowell thinks are the stereotypical “teenage fan girl who is not very social and obsessed with fictional characters”.

I personally loved Illuminae but I get what you said about it taking a little too much time to get to the main point of the story- I didnt mind it though as I loved all of the extra details.

I have also heard from so many people that they don’t really like Celaena and that is the point of her character. She gets so much better in the series and you get to understand why she acts like she does. It is hard though to continue reading a series when you dislike the main character though…..

    • I agree, Rowell’s portrayal of a Fangirl really offended me, we’re certainly not all like that!

Yeah, that’s my main problem with the series, I have heard all of the problematic Sarah J Mass stuff but honestly, even though the series is so popular, I just can’t make myself read a series in which I don’t like the main character.

  2. Awww I love Fangirl and how awkward she is at first. Actually people like her exist and they normally have sisters just like her. But to each their own, lol!

Illuminae was not perfect and I agree so HUGE! I didn’t hate it as much as you did as I actually came to care about the characters by the end. I have read that some readers struggled though!!

I haven’t read the others yet… you made me chuckle the whole time I read this 🙂

    • It’s great that you enjoyed Fangirl, I know that the book actually helped a lot of other readers, it was just soo not my jam.

Yeah, I think now that the book has been out for so long the more negative and 3 star reviews are starting to come out. I can definitely see why so many people enjoyed the book though!

Thank you, I’m glad you got a laugh out of it! 😍

  3. I agree with you on Illuminae, I just didn’t get it! I also feel like To All The Boys I Love Before is overhyped. And ahhh, I love Fangirl it’s one of my favourite books 😭 all the rest of the books I own and I want to read, I’ll have to see if I enjoy them of not 🙂

    • I’ve heard soo many people talk about how good To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before so it’s comforting to know not everyone cares for it (is that weird?). Oh no! I hope you enjoy them and I haven’t put you off the other books! 😍

      • Haha, To All The Boys I Loved Before was okay, but it wasn’t anything special in my opinion! And no that’s not weird! Also no you haven’t, everyone has their own opinions and not everyone is going to like the same book, just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean I won’t!

  4. I agree with you on some of these. I thought fangirl was nothing special, and I read Finnikin of the Rock when I was in primary school and wasn’t interested in reading the sequel. I did really love Illuminae, but I can also see how that was influenced by plot aspects that personally interest me. I thought that the second book in the Illuminae files was better honestly. And Throne of Glass… I am too invested not to keep reading but the reality of the series is very different from what the first book leads you to believe and I don’t like that. I like your bravery in admitting that you don’t like these books… I feel like I should do a post like this.

    • Thank god I’m not the only one who thought they were pretty meh!
I was actually going to read the second book in the Illuminae files but I never actually got around to reading my library copy. But I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it!

It’s so interesting how a series can take such a deep turn and end up being completely different than it was at the start. You should definitely do a post like this, I would love to hear about the books you think were overhyped!

  5. Ah, I love Illuminae and the Throne of Glass series! I used to have Finnikin on the Rock on my TBR because so many people love Marchetta’s books, but I wasn’t really intrigued! She has an adult thriller out that I’ll check out! My overhyped books are the Shatter Me trilogy, the Winner’s trilogy, the Darkest Mind trilogy, and the Mara Dyer trilogy!

  6. Rainbow Rowell is such a terrible writer, and I literally do not understand why everyone hypes her books up so much. I didn’t read Carry On or Fangirl (I only read Elenor and Park), but my best friends read them out of curiosity and confirmed they were both so terrible. I understand the appeal of the books, in terms of the their topics, but they’re soooo badly written and clearly written by someone who has no idea about the fandom communities… I don’t get why people love them so much D:

    • For what I’ve read of her work I really have to agree with you that I really don’t get the hype. Her works don’t seem all that special to me 🙄. Yeah, after reading Fangirl and Carry On I certainly won’t be reading any of her future books, from what I’ve heard Elenor and Park is racist, and I’ve heard basically 0% about her other novels.

  7. Ohh I’m so sad you didn’t like Fangirl or Illuminae! I really liked them but I understand why people couldn’t since those novels are hit or miss to people.
Sadly I have to agree with you with the Throne of Glass series. I really liked the first two book but I think it went downhill and the series aren’t as great now (I’m starting to hate the ships ugh!!)

  8. To be honest, I hated Fangirl with a burning passion. I never even finished the book because it was so terribly written, boring, and just all around annoying (except I kinda liked Levi). The only other book I’ve read on here is Throne of Glass, and while I loved it, I do agree that it’s wayyyyy too overhyped.
